We all take it for granted that we will always have good vision and unless we have vision or eye problems most of us seldom give our eyes a second thought. It is a fact that we are all living longer and as a result eye conditions such as cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration are on the increase, which cause loss of vision and blindness. We can, however, take some simple steps to maintain healthy eyes for life. Here is Nichola’s advise:
Control your weight- there is a very high link between obesity and conditions such as diabetic retinopathy & cataracts.
Stop smoking – cigarette smoking is linked very closely to macular degeneration and cataracts.
Eating a diet rich in fresh fruit, green leafy vegetables and omega 3 fats (from oily fish, nuts & seeds) may prevent or slow down the development of macular degeneration & cataracts. An abundance of colourful fresh fruit and vegetables are vital. Eat a rainbow every day! Speciaally formulated vitamin supplements are available to boost your dietary intake if it is lacking.
Wear wrap around sunglasses with high quality UV protection lenses and brimmed hats to protect your eyesight from harmful UV radiation. This includes the kids!!
Wear protective eyewear when doing DIY, gardening, playing sports such as squash or at work where necessary.
Have regular eye examinations to ensure your getting the best vision for life too.
